Add a Chart to Your Accessible Design

Visual data can tell a powerful story — but to make it accessible for everyone, it’s important to include alt text descriptions alongside your charts. This guide will walk you through adding a chart, importing or editing chart data, and writing descriptive alt text to ensure your designs are inclusive and easy to understand.


Add a Chart

To add a chart or table to your design:

  • In the left sidebar, select Charts.

  • Choose from a variety of chart types to best visualize your data:

    Basic Table
    - Table

    Pie Charts
    - Pie, Half-Pie, Donut Pie, Half-Donut

    Column & Bar Charts
    - Column, Grouped Column, Stacked Column, Percentage Column, Combination
    - Bar, Grouped Bar, Stacked Bar, Percentage Bar, Histogram

    Lines & Area Charts
    - Single Line, Lines, Area, Area-Spline, Percentage Area
    - Single Spline, Splines, Stacked Area, Stacked Area-Spline, Percentage Area-Spline

    Bubble Charts
    - Cloud Bubble

    Stat Charts
    - Donut Stat, Donut, Half-Donut Stat, Half-Donut
    - Progress Bar Stat, Progress Bar, Icon Stat, Icon

    Scatter Charts
    - Scatter Plot, Scatter Bubble

    Hierarchical Charts
    - Pyramid, Funnel

    Other Charts
    - Tree Map, Word Cloud

    👉 You can resize the chart to fit the area on your design canvas you want to fill.

 

Add Data to a Chart

  1. Select the chart.

  2. Click Edit Chart in the top toolbar, or simply double-click the chart to open the Edit Chart panel.

  3. Click the Data tab in the Edit Chart panel on the right.

  4. Type or paste values into the spreadsheet — your chart updates automatically on the design canvas.

  5. To customize further:

    • Change the Legend color using the color picker under the Legend heading in the Setup tab.

    • Toggle the legend on/off to show or hide it.
       

 

Import Data from Another App

You can easily import or paste data into your chart:

Option 1: Upload a file

  1. Select the chart, then click Edit Chart in the top toolbar.

  2. In the panel, click Browse Files.

  3. Select a .csv or .xlsx file from your device.

  4. The data will automatically import into your chart spreadsheet.

Option 2: Copy and paste from a spreadsheet

  1. Copy the data from Google Sheets or Excel (CTRL+C / CMD+C).

  2. Paste it directly into the Venngage chart spreadsheet (CTRL+V / CMD+V).

 

Add Alt Text to Your Chart

To make your design accessible:

  1. Select the chart.

  2. Click Alt Text in the top toolbar to open the Add Alt Text modal.

  3. Write a short, clear description of what the chart represents.
     

  4. You can also use the Auto-generate Alt Text feature to automatically create a description for your image based on its content.

  5. Click Save when done.
