Make your map charts more visually informative and accessible by adjusting the gradient colors, number of steps, and range values. Gradients help viewers quickly understand data differences across regions.
Change the Number of Steps in the Gradient
-
Click to select the map chart, then click Edit Map in the top toolbar to open the Edit Map panel.
-
Go to the Setup tab.
⚠️ Note: To change the number of steps, your “Map Type” must be set to Choropleth.
-
Under Map Style, open the Number of steps dropdown.
A larger number of steps creates a smoother gradient with more colors.
-
A smaller number of steps creates a simpler gradient with fewer colors.
Define a Custom Range of Steps
-
Toggle Custom Range under the “Number of steps” dropdown.
-
Type your desired numeric range in the fields that appear.
Set the first and last ranges to Min and Max, or use the lowest and highest numbers from your dataset.
💡 Using more steps helps viewers easily distinguish the darkest (highest) and lightest (lowest) areas on your map.

-

Choose a shade from the color wheel, My Brand Kit, or use the eyedropper to pick a color from your device.

The border separates geographical areas on your map (default is white
#FFFFFF).-
Click the square beside Border Color to open the Color Tool.
Choose your preferred color from the color wheel, My Brand Kit, or the eyedropper.
✨ Tip: Experiment with step numbers and gradient colors to create a visually balanced and clear data story that’s easy for your audience to interpret at a glance.
