Understanding Resolution and DPI
Resolution
Resolution refers to the detail in an image, whether displayed on a screen or printed. High-resolution images appear sharp and clear, while low-resolution images can look blurry or pixelated when zoomed in.
Example:
Left image: High resolution, crisp, and detailed.
Right image: Low resolution, fuzzy, and pixelated.
On screens: resolution is measured in PPI (Pixels Per Inch). A pixel is the smallest unit a screen can display.
For printing: printers convert PPI to DPI (Dots Per Inch), which measures how many dots of ink are applied per inch of paper.
DPI
DPI (Dots Per Inch) measures print resolution.
Clear, high-quality images print at 300 DPI.
-
Venngage designs default to 96 DPI, which is standard for screens.
💡 Tip for Business or Enterprise users: Download your design as a PDF to achieve 300 DPI print resolution.
RGB vs. CMYK
RGB (Red, Green, Blue): Standard for screens.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black): Standard for print.
Important: Colors may appear slightly different when printed. To check color vibrancy from screen to print, you can use external converters like Rapid Tables.
Choosing the Right Print Size
Venngage allows you to customize your design page size in pixels, inches, or centimeters.
Use online converters (like PixelTo) to convert between pixels and your preferred metric.
Business or Enterprise users can use the resize feature to automatically scale all elements when changing page size.
Using Margins for Printing
Margins define the safe space between your design elements and the edge of the page. Most standard printers cannot print all the way to the edge, so keeping elements within the margins ensures nothing gets cut off.
How to use the margins guide in Venngage:
Open your design in the Editor.
-
Click File in the top toolbar.
-
Select Show margins under Page settings.
Tip: If your design goes beyond the margins on a standard page (e.g., Letter 8" x 11"), parts of your design may be cut off when printing.
Final Tips for Printing
Consider adding a small bleed area if your design has background colors or images extending to the edge.
For professional printing, always use high-resolution PDFs.
Double-check your color mode: use CMYK for print and RGB for digital.
