Designing tables with accessibility in mind ensures that all users — including those with visual impairments or using assistive technology — can easily understand and interact with your data. Venngage’s upgraded Editor provides the tools you need to make your tables clear, readable, and screen-reader friendly.
Header rows and columns for screen readers
Color contrast for visual clarity
Text (font face) size for easier reading
Add Header Rows and Columns
Screen readers rely on header rows and columns to identify and describe table data accurately. By tagging these headers, you make it easier for users to follow along as they navigate through the table.
If your table includes a row or column that functions as a header, tag it appropriately. This metadata will be included in your exported PDF but won’t affect how your table looks.
Example tables from Web Content Accessibility Guidelines:
-
A table with a header row provides context for each column. A screen reader might read a cell as:
“Event (Column 2), The Obelisks.”
-
A table with a header column helps readers understand the data position by row. For example:
“Venue (Row 3), Main Hall.”
-
A table with both header rows and columns offers the most context. For instance:
“Friday (Column 6), 15:00 to 17:00 (Row 5), Open.”
Tip: Venngage currently supports single header rows and columns. For more complex data, consider splitting it into multiple simpler tables.
Ensure Strong Color Contrast
Color contrast plays a key role in readability. Low contrast between text and background colors can make data hard to see and will be flagged in Venngage’s Accessibility Checker.
To fix this, adjust colors from the Color Menu in the Editor to meet accessibility contrast standards and improve visibility for all users.
Use Readable Text Sizes
Larger text helps users with visual impairments easily read table content. Aim to use a minimum of 16px font size for all text in your tables.
If your text size falls below this threshold, Venngage’s Accessibility Checker will alert you so you can make adjustments before publishing or downloading your design.
👉 Designing an accessible table not only improves usability but also ensures inclusivity for every viewer. With Venngage’s accessibility features, you can present data clearly, confidently, and with consideration for all audiences.
